Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by Alex H — 01 Jan 2013
Watched this again, to the "end" this time, and yeah I was a bit too harsh before - but only a bit. There are things I really appreciate about how Reichardt approached this story. Once the initial chunk of the movie lulls you into a spell of boredom, enduring the final half or so isn't as painful.
Eventually there are even conversations between the characters and there's a dramatic moment. Still, there's just too little content in here spread out over too long, even for a "minimalist" movie.
If ya ain't gonna give us dialogue to chew on, at least do some visual storytelling, but there's none of that here. And just about everything about the production is terrible, both design choices and technical things.
I'd much rather revisit Wendy and Lucy than this. I do look forward to watching Reichardt's earlier movies.
