Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Ann D — 21 Jul 2008
Some great shots and scenes for sure. but a few things. for a movie called mean streets, how come all the apartments are fucking nice? seriously, my place in back bay is a shitthole compared to these "gritty" little italy locales.
the characters never develop. and the metaphors are obvious. for example, harvey keitel's charlie plays with fire- just as he plays with fire given his relationship with Johnny Boy. amy robinson fucking blows as the main female character, but then again, scorsese's complete indifference to women is pretty offensive to begin with.
also, the violence is comical and not realistic. a fucking ferocious bar fight- and only a mild shiner is left on one of the characters?...this is a film for the most part uninterested in the consequences of violence, the actual methodology of gangster life, and social implications and psychological interior of its characters .
..so what's left? well, a shitload of style, incredibly innovative camerawork, wonderful montages, and some extremely solid performances by harvey keitel and robert de niro...
