Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Ethan P — 13 Dec 2015
Mean Streets doesn't live up to its name. The characters are soft, the fights are clumsy and awkward and the plot is mostly boring. There are some interesting moments, the murder in the bar and the explosive finally, but this film is only entertaining in violent bursts.
Harvey Kettle's performance is nuanced and intriguing, with his spiritual confusion, but Robert De Niro is just a restless, angry idiot. Maybe the film's low-key and casual interplay make it more realistic, but it wasn't at all what I thought it would be.
