Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by Peter F — 13 Dec 2016
Robert Altman's dig at the western genre is an early success for the director, and a calling for his unique talents. Using some really outstanding sets (that now recall HBO's Deadwood a bit), McCabe & Mrs.
Miller is palpable in its period details, and goes for a languid tone that is rarely seen in any western movie. Altman also saves most of the genre thrills till the climax, but still presides tension through gritty material, and sumptuous songs from Leonard Cohen (one of the few cases in which I approve of a movie using anochronistic music).
Another superb film from one of new Hollywood's most under-appreciated innovators.
