Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by Kuhan T — 06 Aug 2010
A largely forgotten masterpiece from Robert Altman. The mumbled male dialogue - a reflection of the primitive nature of life at the frontiers of America - is balanced against the perfect articulation of the camera and the sound track. Beatty's pimping, gun-toting exterior is all cynic but his relationship with Christie is lovely but broken before it ever really begins.
Like Unforgiven that followed it almost 30 years later, this shows the West as it was rather than some romantic ideal. The final battle is cinematic perfection.
