Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by Brian S — 18 Jul 2009
In my opinion, one of the strangest, most antithetical westerns ever made. the story is very basic with very few details or major character developments. the acting is decent, although very annoying. the cinematography was the stand-out highlight of the film for me, and even that lost a bit of impact with some unusual editing.
much like the Leonard Cohen music that permeates it, this film has a dry quirkiness that challenges you with all your might to like it--like it's saying "go ahead, find a reason to care. you've got 2 hours, surely you can find SOMETHING.
" in my case, I really didn't. while I can appreciate what this film aimed to accomplish, Altman, just as in MASH, bored me more than impressed me.
