Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by Andy S — 30 Nov 2017
Cinematography-wise and locations are just downright beautiful and gorgeous. Seeing the West in it's true essence of gritty and dirty is very refreshing. And Altman, being the amazing director he is, was able to teleport me directly into that time period. Especially with all the believable props and set pieces which looked authentic, which probably really are.
That scene with the man climbing the church tower and the sun just starting to hide right behind the mountains, was breathtaking. I even paused the movie just tot get a better look at it. Absolutely beautiful. The colors, the images, the whole feel of the movie, is spectacular.
This movie has some very funny genuine moments. Julie Christie is wonderful, like always. In this movie, she definitely is a force to be reckoned with. Warren Beatty also plays an interesting and pretty funny character. Great cast of characters overall, everyone playing their role wonderfully.
Apart from being a Western movie, this movie also touches on the topic of Capitalism and politics. It shows you that even back then, people were willing to kill other people off if they didn't do business with them. Especially if the company you don't want to do business with, is one of the richest and most powerful ones. It shows the conniving and backhandedness that is American greed and corporation.
Overall, amazing film and definitely a Western that should not be forgotten and remembered with the likes of Unforgiven and the Clint Eastwood Westerns.
