Review of Masculin Féminin (1966) by Donovan D — 20 Oct 2007
On first viewing, I have to admit feeling completely underwhelmed by this film, mainly because this is not exactly the most exciting film Godard would ever make. Having seen it again, I still find this film quite tedious but I have an appreciation for the mood Godard is attempting to create.
The monotony and absolute lack of change within the film seems perfectly suited as expression of the relationship between Paul (Jean-Pierre Leaud) and Madeleine (Chantal Goya), and I do think there is a bit of the Godard and Karina relationship here in those characters.
The politics here as well is interesting and not yet as distracting and embarassing as it would be shortly in films like La Chinoise. This is middle-weight Godard: not awful, but not a masterpiece either.
