Review of Masculin Féminin (1966) by Jonny B — 05 Nov 2011
'Masculin Feminin' is Godard at his strongest when it comes to charged political, social, and sexual themes. Godard loves long dialogue scenes complimented by picturesque B & W photography and an eccentric use of sound, all done with conviction and honesty.
The movie is a glaring examination of the interaction between the sexes, and as a result 'Masculin Feminin' feels like one of Godard's more intimate and sensual movies. Unfortunately, Godard has a proclivity to strike the viewer with too much obvious and distracting political commentary.
However, the cast is strong with Jean-Pierre Leaud as the always reliable rebellious, lachrymose character and he gives one of his best performances. 'Masculin Feminin' may not be a masterpiece but it's Godard at his most accessible and it's never dry on ideas.
