Review of Mary Poppins (1964) by Brett H — 16 Mar 2015
Finally got around to watching this beloved children's classic that completely holds up after fifty years with some amazing special effects and timeless songs! Julie Andrews is flawless as the nurturing, but strict title character and there's much more to her than I had originally perceived.
Dick Van Dyke stole the show for me however, with his incredibly physical and animated performance and any scene with him in it put a smile on my face. This film is a Disney classic and I unfortunately never grew up watching it, so coming into it completely fresh as an adult was a memorable experience and it charmed me endlessly.
I will say that it's too long and some of the dance numbers seem to go on forever, but that's a minor nitpick in a film that wants to entrance you. The special effects and clever editing surprisingly still hold up and I got to hand it to the filmmakers for getting by with their ingenuity to pull off all of the feats.
It's likely not a film I'll watch again anytime soon, but I'm glad to say I've finally seen it and it won't soon be leaving my memory!
