Review of Man with a Movie Camera (1929) by Philip O — 19 Jan 2009
Easily one of the best Russian experimental silent documentaries from the 20s I've ever seen--wait, scratch that. This is one of the best films I've ever seen. With jaw-dropping editing, innovation, and experiment, this was just breathtaking.
This film does everything Koyaanisqatsi does, but did it earlier and better. I saw it with a very modern score, but it fit so perfectly because this film has such an incredibly modern feel. I actually could not believe what I was watching.
Viewing this masterpiece was one of the most fulfilling cinematic experiences, even decades later. Entrancing.
