Review of Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) by Davey M — 22 Nov 2010
If this movie doesn't break your heart then I don't know what will. Who would have expected that Beulah Bondi would be one half of one of the most romantic movie couples ever put on film? (For the record, Victor Moore is just as good.
) It reminded me of the best works of both Chekhov and Ozu--and it's as good as them, too. It's hard to believe that a movie this grown-up, this quiet, and this charitable was ever made by a Hollywood studio.
