Review of M (1931) by Kenneth B — 08 Sep 2008
I think I am right in saying that this was the first German sound film ever made. It was certainly Fritz Langs (I read that much at least).
M tells of a child murderer roaming the streets of Berlin. It begins as a murder mystery but soon becomes a game of cat and mouse as a group of vigilante criminals and the police both chase the killer.
The finale is impassioned and what comes before it is suspenseful and intruiging. My only gripe is with the subtitles on the DVD that I rented. On more than a few occasions the letters bled into the the actual picture. For a lesser film I might have given up but perseverance pays. (Please note that I did not knock any stars off for poor subtitles).
