Review of M (1931) by Rick R — 15 Nov 2010
M (1931).
This is one of those movies, that you've always heard about but may never have had the opportunity to see. If you get an opportunity to see this or rent it, definitely go for it. This is Fritz Lang's first talkie and shows what an amazing director he is, and how he brought film noir to America.
It was another great collaborated writing effort by Lang, his wife Thea von Harbou and also Egon Jacobson. It also premiered gifted character actor, Peter Lorre on film who was previously, only doing stage performances in Berlin.
A child murderer is on the loose and the cops have been cracking down so hard on everyone, that even organized crime can't make any money. They organize the Hobos Union to watch the streets, try to capture this murderer and dish out some street justice. But, who are these people (murders, thieves, and bums) to judge a mentally ill killer?
It's an interesting concept and very thought-provoking coming from pre-Nazi Germany.
