Review of M (1931) by Rob S — 13 Jul 2017
Cool movie. Lots of subversive ideas that you wouldnt expect to see in such an early film. Peter Lorre is awesome. I can't imagine a better child-murderer. My only complaint is that it could have been a solid half hour shorter. I dont usually mind the leisurely pace of old movies, but there was a lot of wasted film here where no plot was advanced, no mood was set, and there was nothing of particular beauty going on to justify the time spent.
Oh, and the whistling: so creepy. Always assumed that melody was a Danny Elfman original, so it was cool to see it used so much earlier. Also looks like Tarantino was referencing this in Kill Bill with the whistling nurse.
