Review of M (1931) by Kyle G — 30 Mar 2011
Anatomizes a crime's deep effect on a city's residents, in a style that's shockingly bare but still all-encompassing and sharp: like The Wire of '30s Germany, tough-as-nails and funny and well-played.
Fritz Lang has kind of a clumsy way with sound (and some other technical issues) -- his first talkie, I know, but still -- which can have a disruptive, frustrating effect on the otherwise very tight story.
.. and it isn't just some "back in the day" inferiority that I could get used to, but an actual, systematic problem. On the whole, though, M is a bright and ambitious film.
