Review of Lovely Molly (2011) by Luke J — 02 Nov 2012
Lovely Molly accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish. Unfortunately, however, the results are also extremely muddled, unexplained, and often uncomfortably disturbing. Director Eduardo Sanchez shows his calling card when it comes to the scares much like The Blair Witch Project of 1999, using very little actual images or apparitions, but sounds and reactions to frighten the audience.
Therefore, what we get is a mixture of, what I would say, The Blair Witch Project and The Shining. Jack Nicholson's renowned insanity in the latter is shown explicitly well in Lovely Molly, with Gretchen Lodge starring in this descent into madness, and she does a fantastic job.
Lovely Molly, although very creepy and the music certainly adds to this (courtesy of post-rock group Tortoise), is very jumbled and unexplained at the end, refusing to explain certain past behaviors or reasons for the behaviors.
Where I really enjoyed the creepiness, the fairly graphic sex scenes I feel are unnecessary and could have shown a little more subtlety. It shows Molly's change for sure, but where the rest of the film shows Sanchez's subtle manipulation of the imagination, these scenes are inconsistent in contrast.
Overall, I enjoyed Lovely Molly, but some things needed to be explained in further depth.
