Review of Lovely Molly (2011) by Paul R — 31 Aug 2013
As I opened my LOVEFiLM envelope and saw Lovely Molly had arrived I pretty much threw it down in annoyance, frustrated at my addiction to adding random horror films to my high priority list. So Saturday night seemed the best place for it, I always prefer a Horror film at night, seems more fitting. As soon as the film started I knew I would like it, it did the things I always wished Horror films would do, it followed a path that seemed more credible than other recent horror films I've seen.
It opens with homage to Eduardo's past success of The Blair Witch Project with a home video recording, a great start adding the necessary realism and grounding all horrors need. What's particularly effective is the swift introduction of strange events in the house, there's no frustrating character build up, it's all done in unison. As we start to be witness to these strange events we also see that there is something troubled about Molly, something hidden from her past.
I've always believed that with paranormal horror that less is more. His film is handled well in this regard, using sound and darkness to its advantage and the build up of fear works very well. It's full of slow build tension and the excellent soundtrack gives a real eerie feel.
The main driver of this film is our lead, Gretchen Lodge. She handles her character beautifully, keeping us guessing as to her frame of mind and her trauma seems very real and devastating. She almost single handedly keeps this film going although the supporting cast all add their own credibility to the story.
Great visual style, use of colour and splendid sound design this Indie Horror gets my vote. It's ambiguity, and the fact it doesn't tie up all the answers in a nice little bow I actually really like. It's nice to be able to digest and decide things for yourself once in a while instead of being spoon fed forced conclusion. Some might argue that it's just lazy filmmaking but I don't think you would say the same thing to David Lynch about Mulholland Drive now would you... Anyway back to the point. this horror is a great Indie addition to the popular Paranormal Horror genre and doesn't get enough credit. It's mystery lingered long after the credits rolled.
