Review of Love Is Strange (2014) by James S — 18 Sep 2014
The acting is very good but the script and the cinematography are not very good. The script raises so many issues like the relationship between the two boys, the reason why they stole the French books, what does the husband do anyway, and how did the parents react when they received the letter from George.
it received good reviews for the very good acting but for me the writing and filming took away from my experience. what was with the prolonged closeup of Joey crying. it must have been 45 seconds and the length was not supported by script or texture.
my eyes wandered off of the actor which is why the rule of thumb is no more than 15 seconds I think. unless your Almodovar and have multi-textured scenes or an actor like Penelope cruz or a scene like the confessional scene in "calvary" its awful for the viewer and the photographer and the editors should have known better.
I just was too disappointed with this movie to rate it it. the critics obviously weren't bothered by the same things but .... I don't know. see what you think and if you love film and film theory let us k now.
