Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Margarita S — 11 Mar 2018
A nicely woven biopic that alternates between a younger (Dano) and older (Cusack) Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. While the mental illness angle is an interesting one to pursue, it's done so very carefully.
Distinctive lines are drawn between "good" and "bad" characters which gives the story a cleaned-up, one dimensional feel. It would've been more compelling had the film dared to handle the tougher aspects of mental illness.
In turn, the narrative and character depictions would've had greater complexity and better realism.
