Review of Looking for Eric (2009) by Fergus S — 22 Dec 2010
"I am not a man... I am Cantona.".
Far more comedic and almost slapstick at time than most of Ken Loach's filmography, 'Looking For Eric' is the beautifully well-written story of Eric, a postman with two failed marriages and two teenage sons to cope with.
But he's not really coping, not at all, and he starts talking to a poster of his hero and idol, Eric Cantona ... who promptly talks back, offering life-coaching tips and Cod-Philosophy to help him face his fears and turn his life around.
The whole cast are terrific, but Steve Evets is brilliant in the leading role, onscreen practically the whole time, and his chemistry with Cantona is wonderful. The climax, in which he surprises himself and his enemy, is hilarious.
Highly recommended.
