Review of Look Back in Anger (1959) by André D — 30 Oct 2009
I used to watch this film every time it showed up on the late movie when I was a kid, and it still holds up. I believe this was the film that commenced the "Angry Young Man" cycle out of Britain in the late 50s and early 60s, which was followed by "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" and "A Taste of Honey.".
Burton is great (well, forecful) as the fierce, angry Jimmy Porter suffering his Midlands hell, and making everyone around him suffer, too. Gary Raymond lends balance as his pal, Cliff, and Claire Bloom, a fine actress always, gets involved in the psychic mess. Of all the treatments of Osborne's source play, this is my favorite. It captures the grit of the period as well as say, "Prick Up Your Ears" does, too.
