Review of Lonesome Jim (2005) by Ryan C — 22 Apr 2008
A really enjoyable piece of indie movie Americana. Set in a small mid west town in Indiana younger brother Jim (Casey Affleck) returns home to his family after failing to make it on his own in NYC. After arriving home Jim suddenly remembers why he left in the first place: a busy-body overbearing mother, a father who is very cold and distant, and Tim (Kevin Corrigan), the older brother who is clinically depressed and has attempted to off him self in an accidental fashion.
After Tim recent accident, Jim is forced to pick up Tim's duties: coaching a young girls basketball team, working in his parents factory, and taking care of his two nieces. Jim goes on with this unfortunate despair of a life even with a developing relationship he finds with a local nurse, Anika (Liv Tyler).
ultimately Jim learns to find his own independence with out pushing anyone away. Lonesome Jim is a decent piece that I believe any mid-20 something individual would be able to relate to this film. Great performances by Affleck and Tyler and surprisingly amazing direction from Steve Buscemi.
I would really recommend any person to catch this.
