Review of London to Brighton (2006) by Sophie B — 11 Jan 2010
'London To Brighton' was one of those cases where I had no idea why it was in my queue, and I watched it anyway. The film is one of the more brutal and violent films I've seen in a while, and it seems proud of it rather than showing for a purpose.
The film features five or so main characters 'clashing' over a 24-hour period, presenting in a non-linear format. Here, the non-linear format exists solely to give it more awards potential; it doesn't add much to the story; a couple of flashbacks would have sufficed.
I like my brutality and my violence as long as there's some humanity to the characters, but here, there's -no- humanity. Incredibly one-sided, morally bankrupt characters come together to do terrible things.
It let me shaken, not in a good way, but in a way where I was saying to myself 'why does this filmmaker think this is accomplished storytelling?'.
