Review of Lolita (1962) by Clay K — 26 Jun 2008
I'm sure an argument could and probably has been made that Kubrick gave Sellars too free a hand in this movie, improvising trademark Sellars-memorable characters unimagined in the book - but not having read the book myself (yet; it's on the list of must-reads), I was surprised and delighted by how *funny* the movie is.
Of course, there's always a trade-off - I have no doubt that what the movie gains in humor, it loses in sexual tension and moral quagmire. But heck, there's little subtlety in Shelley Winters' performance either and that doesn't stop it from being wildly entertaining.
So I'm giving four stars based solely on how much I enjoyed the movie, not how accurately it adapted the book. We'll see how I feel once I've finally read it.
