Review of Lolita (1962) by Austin B — 06 Aug 2008
The question: How did they ever make a movie of Lotita? The answerL Hire a genius named Stankley Kubrick. Kubrick was able to create a film that was as powerfully shocking as the novel without needing to go into detail 9which the censors at the time wouldn't possibly allow.
) The film doesn't have the traditional Kubrick style, but it doesn't matter. The movie works without it. The drama's presentation is dates, but still compelling. The performances were also memorable.
Mason and Winters give what should have been Oscar-nominated performances. Sellers (in shades of the Strangloveing to come) and Lyon were even more stellar. Granted, time has not been the kindest to the movie.
The innuendo and allegations seem rather dull to the modern audience. While Sellers' performance is tops, I question his nescesity in some scenes. The film also has that period-typical loud drama, where the drama lies only in how loud the characters are talking to each other, which gets boring after a wile.
If you can appreciate the period it was made and the ground it broke, then you should see it.
