Review of Lolita (1962) by Dustin S — 12 Dec 2008
From what I've read, the sexual elements of this film were incredibly censored. It is obvious in parts that Kubrick would have gone farther if he was allowed. However, it is a pointless argument because it still has the same effect on the audience.
The initial flirting is top-notch and very comedic. As far as directing goes, it's not Kubrick's best work but the story is able to pick up the slack. Having not read the book, I can't comment on how wel ladapted it is but Nabokov did the screenplay so it can't be far from the true vision.
If the censorship is a sticking point for you, don't let it be. I'm as much against censorship as anyone but in this case, not much was lost other than Kubrick not being allowed the movie he wanted.
