Review of Lolita (1962) by Grace E — 26 Jun 2009
As a huge fan of Nabokov's novel, I was a bit wary to view its film adaptations. However, I can tell you that as a fan of the novel and a fan of film, I much prefer Kubrick's version as compared to the '97 version.
Some complain that this version is under-sexualized, but I view it as being subtle whereas the '97 version was in-your- face and almost pornographic. I felt that the '97 version was sexually gratuitous which detracted from the plot and characters.
It also tried to humanize Humbert-Humbert too much, and make him less of a villain. This version has far better acting, direction, and humor. I feel it does the most justice to the novel, and is well worth seeing.
