Review of Lolita (1962) by Caleb M — 30 Jul 2010
Lolita is a hilarious and marvelously touching adaptation of Nabokov's brilliant novel. Kubrick's cast is wonderful, they nail the subtle complexities of their characters from Humbert Humbert's vain ego and obsessions, to Charlotte Haze's fears and Lolita's charm and sexuality.
Everyone here want's something, be it sex, love, or attention, and they know how to use others to get what they want. Peter Sellers manages to steal each scene he's in as Quilty, and thank God for the man, because just having James Mason as company for 2 1/2 hours would get old fast.
Sellers livens the film up by bringing an outright comical presence and someone for Humbert to be suspicious of.
