Review of Little Women (2019) by Tanson — 19 Oct 2020
Little Women 2019: Four Little Women Unraveled.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, also the director of Lady Bird, Little women is another attempt on a popular classic American novel. There's also a former version of Little Women produced in 1994. However, the 2019 version is more modern yet more fragmental. Usually these kinds of adaptions on classic novels are favored by the Academy. And without surprises, Little Women 2019 got 6 Oscar Nominations including the Best Picture.
This novel was originally written by Louise Alcott, following "Little women", Louise has written sequels"Little Men" and "Jo's Boys". The novel addresses three major themes: "domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine's individual identity." Scholars clarify Little Women as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel. In this movie, Gerwig doesn't follow the method of the former movie to tell a story chronically, instead it adopts a lot of flashback fashion. In that way, she made Jo March the story-teller, and move back and forth to tell Jo's family life - the frolics, the love, and the growth of the four dear sisters.
As a movie that focuses on group performance, Little Women 2019 spends a lot of time depicting different characteristics of the four girls - Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy.
Meg, as apparently presented in the movie by Emma Watson, is a gorgeous girl who has the gift of acting, and has been partnered with Jo throughout the years. Meg, from Jo's perspective, is a great actress who can become famous and independent from men, making a fortune by working with Jo. However, such a beautiful and self-sufficient woman chooses marriage over her career....
