People call this sentimental...and in a way it is, but when you get down to it, how depressing is this, really? and if its as depressing as I see it to be then how much does it call into question a sentimental viewing? its much like so many of his other films or perhaps an extension of them, only that this has much dialog.

its a meditation on life which is bound to end on some existential moment which it does. it seems to me to be just as long as it needed to be to have the intended effect. plenty of criticism and speculation about the film but not much real critical thought, ESPECIALLY in the synopsis here on flixster.

speaking of, what the hell kind of synopsis is this anyway?! its more of an indictment of the star than it is an overview of the film. dont listen to david kronke (whoever the hell he is) because any of the claims made here are entirely surface and not interested in any real significance beyond paparazzi conjecture.

keaton is also great in this as well as how endearing claire bloom. but at bottom, at least for me, this is a film without a happy ending. and I dont mean that just because of the characters demise more because life ended when it was becoming good again.

its tragic. heartbreaking.
