Review of Limelight (1952) by Elijah B — 16 Jul 2008
A lot of people say this is Chaplin's worst. Don't listen to them for a minute. This is probably Chaplin's very best, as far as his dramedies go. There is very little comedy, but this film will tear you up emotionally.
And if it doesn't you either have never had an audience in the palm of your hand and realize the risk of losing that control or you are completely heartless. This appeals, like most of his films, to both the common viewers and hits hard with actors.
Children are espescially vulnerable to Chaplin, as all of his films are kid friendly. While I regard this as my favorite film of all time, take my advice, and if you are going to show Chaplin to kids, start them with The Gold Rush.
