Review of Limelight (1952) by Christopher B — 28 Aug 2017
Is 'Limelight' a masterpiece? Maybe it's two flawed, too lopsided to unanimously stand as one. However, if solid is not the word to describe Chaplin's late classic, the wizardry mixture of emotions created by the sad comedy of an aging clown (is it autobiographical?) is an explosion of laughs and tears.
'Limelight' has depth, several dimensions, and is, above all, a thought on what it is to be an artist. A mature work made with all of Chaplin's heart and artistry. It is a beautiful ending to a beautiful career, and a beautiful collaboration with Buster Keaton.
It is a film which calls more for analysis than reviewing.
