Review of Life Is Beautiful (1997) by Matthew L — 08 Nov 2010
Yes, I know it has a wonderful sentiment, and yes, the story is touching. But I couldn't take Roberto Benigni seriously. How do you leap from an hour of Three Stooges style low-brow comedy (which I actually preferred) to serious Holocaust film so quickly? Just as the love story (which is quite good) starts picking up and developing conflict, we leap ahead three or four years.
You don't cut a film's conflict off and create a new one. To do so is jarring; no matter how "beautiful" the story is.
