Those who accuse this movie of making light of the Holocaust completely miss the point of this film. The main character is literally trying to trivialize living in a concentration camp so as to protect his son.

While this movie has it's sad moments if you want a depressing, gritty Holocaust experience watch Schindler's List. I might actually suggest watching Life is Beautiful and then watching Schindler's list to really understand what the father did for his son in Life is Beautiful.
