Review of Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same (1976) by Jackie S — 07 Feb 2009
OK...so the premise of the movie was sound. Show bandmembers away from the touring with their families, personal interests etc. And also introduce fantasy sequences in the middle of live renditions of Zeppelin songs.
What is with the cheese factor in the 70's...!?! Ok this is way over board... but 35+ years later it works!
The nostalgia associated with this movie, the camera work, the music, the band in its "preening prime", and the shots of NY city including the newly built WTC are quite foreboding.
I really don't think that Led Zeppelin would have had as much an impact on rock music if they had not done this film classic.
At the time it was panned by every single critic that walked the face of the earth. Today, it represents an historically significant take on the excesses associated with the greatest rock band ever. And really it only touches on the surface. I have read about 5 books about Led Zeppelin. All the rumours have a lot of truth swirling around them whether it be Plant's ego, Page's mysticism, Jones' groundedness, Grant's bullying, or Bonzo's violent Jekyl and Hyde split personality.
But this band is legendary and keeps making money hand over fist.
I really can't wait until somehow someway Jimmy Page agrees to some kind of contract to produce Guitar Hero or Rock Band products.
Jimmy Page is a very shrewd and innovative businessman. You can bet that when they do do something... it will be hugely successful. It won't be just a one shot product. it will be like Rock Band Led Zeppelin Volumes I-V, or something like that. and it will probably be released with "PS4" or something huge like that.
