Review of Leatherheads (2008) by Geoffroy B — 12 Dec 2008
Apparently this was supposed to be like the screwball comedies from old Hollywood. Well, they forgot to make it like one. Sure, it takes place during the era, but the film is nothing like that. A screwball comedy (despite the name that insinuated physical comedy) is supposed to consist of fast talking people having witty conversations that overlap each other.
This happens once, and the rest is made on the hope that people will like it because it tries to be a callback to a different time. Clooney is good, but he can't save this. And Zellweger (shudder), she is just awful.
But if you like her, maybe this is for you. I cannot stand the sight of her myself, so that hurt this movie for me. But Clooney did create a good background. The era is very well represented, but do not expect exact facts about early pro football.
But this movie does entertain at times, I just expected much more from it.
