Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Tom B — 11 Jun 2009
A formalist masterpiece, strengthened by an intellectual rigour and stark modernity. A powerful lead performance by Monica Vitti, rightfully thrusting her into international superstardom. Despite this, the film undeniably drags at points, without achieving the hypnotic state of Antonioni's other works.
Ingmar Bergman's damning criticisms of Antonioni perhaps justified best with L'Avventura - no doubt a slight editing job would tighten the film, moving it away from flirtations with self-indulgence and Tarkovsky-like meanderings.
