Review of Last Life in the Universe (2003) by Glenn G — 27 May 2007
I can't be too sure when Asano Tadanobu became my favourite actor, but I will give credit to the Vancouver International FIlm Festival for introducing us at the screening of Ichi the Killer many years ago. Since then, the VIFF has allowed many happy reunions including Last Life in the Universe.
I've always felt that a great movie/story/piece of art should be able to continue telling its story long after it's finished and you've moved on.
My first impression of this movie left me blown away; the cinematography, acting, and script all played a huge part in my desire to see this movie not fall the the fate of Shangrii-la (Japan Goes Bankrupt); another quality foreign film to hit the festival circuit never to be seen again.
When PALM pictures picked up the distribution rights to this, it was on the top of my shopping list.
A quiet movie you can watch on your own or with they type of friends who can stay quiet for the length of the film.
