Review of Last Life in the Universe (2003) by Harold Dave N — 30 Dec 2009
...sometimes less is more, and having that appeal feels so much better once you have succumbed to its entirety...i just can't shake off that feeling as to how attractive this film can get...
...this is a story of a suicidal Japanese, geeky in a lot of ways but mysteriously funny and has an absurd way of living, almost bleak, scheduled and organized all the time, who meets a Thai girl who has an opposite way of living, carefree, no limits and totally independent, then they live within the boundaries of their own way of living eventually stringing along together in a beneficial relationship as they both try to find redemption and life.
...Last Life reminds me a lot of Punch Drunk Love or Lost In Translation but each movie is so different it just has a common denominator, all of which are real and unsugar-coated...
....the best thing it has to offer is it just takes you along the way, it smoothens itself out and becomes cozy that eventhough it can be serious at times it is ok...
...the screenplay, directing and musical score is really good, as well as the actors...
...now I did not complain as to the quality of the film 'cause sometimes it looks grainy but this is one of those rare moments that substance triumphs over matter and this gem is definitely not an exclusion...
