Review of Laid to Rest (2009) by John G — 04 Jul 2010
Most slasher films follow a formula: They shamelessly copy their predecessors and create lackluster antagonists with stories devoid of substance. We come to expect this with every new slasher, and Laid to Rest, Robert Hall's attempt at the slasher genre, will not win an award for originality. It does, however, breathe some life back into an almost dead beloved horror genre.
Laid to Rest begins quickly and rarely lets up. The story seems generic at first, but as the plot unfolds we see more than one dimension driving this film. Beyond the story, the actors play their parts well, and the gore surpasses most expectations, surprising me on more than one occasion.
Another facet that helps Laid to Rest lies in its adherence to realism; at least as real as a slasher can be. The story gives us human characters who act realistically and a monstrous MAN who, again, seems credible. The film ends on a small twist that challenges our notion of the rest of the film, but still remains true to the viewing experience.
This film deserves to be seen by any self-respecting horror fan or anyone looking for a well-made slasher.
