Review of Lady and the Tramp (1955) by Jaron G — 18 Mar 2012
Lady and the Tramp is a departure from the norm for Disney in that it is an original story from the studio rather than one based on fairy tales of yore. It was also the first animated feature to be produced in Cinamascope - a technique which widens the aspect ratio of the film to separate it from the more common TV standard square, and gives the film more immersive depth. This technology has evolved to standards we are accustomed to today with 16:9 wide screen TV's. The film itself is fairly banal. Stand-out moments include the iconic spaghetti kiss and the amusing beaver. The Siamese cats in the movie made me feel angry at the species in general. Annoying to say the least.
Not a lot happens in the movie. Girl lives in rich luxury, meets scruffy boy from 'the hood' - learns about 'the streets' - boy turns out to be a hero. Maybe if the tramp turned out to be a famous rapper by the end of the flick it would be more appealing. Of course the 1950's had less rappers than present time, so we are forced to make do with the soundtrack as it is.
The technique and style of the animation in Lady and the Tramp are certainly it's strongest points. The detail in the background is awesome. The study of the different breeds of canine amazing. The fluidity of movement throughout the film is truly an accomplishment, and testament to the evolution of the studio. The techniques employed in the fight scene between Tramp and three other strays is shot well to give a sense of danger and are quite frightening. There are cut-aways to shadows to mask the violence- yet it somehow enhances it. Clever stuff.
Lady and the Tramp may not be the most iconic of the Disney classics. It is over shadowed by the epics; Snow White and Pinochio, but still holds its own in terms of style and visual execution. The kids enjoyed it, but are less likely to watch it over and over like some others in the collection. I'm looking at you Lion King.
