Review of La Strada (1954) by Robben M — 28 Mar 2008
The beginning of Federico Fellini's "fabulist" style, showing an indeterminate world with colorful characters and realistic personalities inhabiting broadly painted people. Fellini's wife, Guilietta Masina, is the female lead, a poor girl who seems to be autistic and yet elegant in her simple view of the world.
She is bought by a local strongman, Zampano (played by Anthony Quinn). Unfortunately for her, he is a cold and lonely man, jaded by the world, while she, by contrast is almost spritley and etheral in her energy.
However, despite our expectations, Zampano receives his epiphany too late, and it all ends in a powerful tragedy. One of Fellini's many masterpieces.
