Review of La Strada (1954) by Spencer P — 27 Dec 2015
Extraordinarily haunting tragedy by Fellini. Zampora (Anthony Quinn) "buys" the simple and sheltered Gelsomina to take her on the road as his carnival assistant. Zampora is a brute who abuses and intimidates her, for which he feels remorse far too late.
Quinn is great as Zampora but Giulietta Masina's performance as Gelsomina is magnetic- superb as both performer and assistant, something about her expressions and movements, as one friend commented almost Chaplinesque, a silent film star for the talkies.
One to watch again soon.
