Review of La Strada (1954) by Cesar G — 31 Dec 2013
A young and simple girl is sold off to a strong street circus man and falls in love with him regardless of the fact that he is a rude and cold man. The film follows the many adventures and misadventures they encounter along the way, and Fellini mixes lively comic sequences with emotional drama, building up to a tragic epilogue that seemed almost inevitable.
In this film we find an inspired Fellini deal poetically with the circus, a reoccurring theme in his works, though this time he is not afraid to look at its negative and binding aspects. Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina in their respective roles are excellent and memorable and their uneasy chemistry adds genuinity and great human depth to the story.
