Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Ted W — 19 Aug 2010
This was one of those ones where I said, "La Strada, 81/2 or La Dolce Vita?" Three tremendously great movies, but which one of the three would I bring with me to a desert isle if I had to select only one.
After much soul searching I had to come back to this one. It has the humor and real people of the of the other two, but the plot featuring Alain Cuny broke my heart and added a level of reality that I never expected: the tragedy that hits us all when we least expect it, that redefines our lives and changes our priorities.
I would also recommend the Toby Dammit segment of Spirits of the Dead as an additional part of La Dolce Vita that never made it into the movie.
