Review of Krull (1983) by Lyndon W — 05 Sep 2012
This film scrapes by with 3 stars from me. It was an ambitious film for the time it came out in. A thick storyline is hidden between some almost {at times} laughable special effects and questionable acting.
Still though, it is a sort of period piece for fantasy adventures with swords, wizards and their accompanying sub-plots. The typical hero overcoming adversity sort of story, yet good old Ken Marshall does not seem to suffer any tragic faults that he must overcome, like any decent hero.
Nope, he just smiles his way through some pretty arduous mini-quests to save his lady love. The sword fighting is quite hilarious. Not only would kids with sticks in a playground provide a more authentic account of sword swathing soldiers, but they'd not need to use frikkin' laser beams attached to said swords or pikes.
Nope. That was a bit weird. Zap and then swing away. I mean, it would be like having a lightsaber fight with Kendo swords in any other film. But hey, this is what gives this film a bit of oddball charm.
Beyond that, I do feel that a remake might be in order, except a deft hand like Peter Jackson could probably solve many of the countless problems this original incarnation brings with it.
