Review of Krull (1983) by Will W — 07 Feb 2014
'Krull' was an enjoyable movie for me. One critic called this film 'Excalibur' meets 'Star Wars' and I would agree. The movie mixes sci-fi and fantasy elements in an interesting way, and I liked the practical creature designs, including a cyclops and a stop-motion animated giant spider.
This film had surprisingly good production values and cinematography for a film of this genre from the 1980's. Overall, I liked this better than similar films such as 'Willow'. This movie was rumored to have started out as an official Dungeons & Dragons movie, although D&D creator Gary Gygax denies this.
Still, the movie plays out like an old school D&D quest. The well-designed sets, costumes, and effects make this movie more watchable than other fantasy films from this time.
