Review of Knife in the Water (1962) by Grant P — 02 Dec 2007
I don't know about this one. Polanski's films are usually revealing and compelling, but Nóz w wodzie is rather maladroit.
There's a certain passion about boating that is obviously displayed throughout a good portion of the film, but I could really care less. I guess the biggest problem is that it's not very interesting. With a title like "Knife in the Water," I felt mislead, not that I expected action sequences but definitely sharper imagery. The last half-hour is moderately fulfilling, but the ambiguous ending simply leaves it all for naught.
Is there a deeper meaning among the actions of the characters? Usually I'm aware of symbolism, but I fail to comprehend much of anything beyond the boat here.
Additionally, I think I might have enjoyed watching this more in the summer. Watching this in a cold room in December didn't help my enjoyment, haha.
