Review of Kiss Me Deadly (1955) by Will "The Thrill" V — 04 Feb 2007
Directed by Robert Aldrich.
Starring Ralph Meeker, Albert Dekker, Paul Stewart, Wesley Addy, Maxine Cooper, Cloris Leachman.
Answering machines. Sports cars rigged with dynamite. Designer apartments. Short-haired dames. Truth Serums. It sounds like James Bond?s likely plot. The big difference is that this is Film Noir with a ready cocked loaded gun starring Mickey Spillaine?s grittiest anti-hero Mike Hammer?the gumshoe with a penchant for slapping elderly people who wouldn?t talk and breaking valuable stuff as part of the breathe down. Aldrich put the beat in detective and came up with probably the finest noir film outside of ?Double Indemnity,? the influence of which can be seen in today?s thrillers like ?Bourne Identity? and others with the word paranoid in them.
Best Scene: Pandora?s box is opened. Aldrich put the ?beat? in detective noir.
QUOTE: ?Now listen, Mike. Listen carefully. I?m gonna pronounce a few words. Harmless words. Just a bunch of letters scrambled together. But their meaning is very important. Try to understand what they mean. Manhattan Project. Los Alamos. Trinity.?
